The clinic season runs from September to December each year with approximately 45 different clinics run throughout the zone. At these clinics officials learn / master:
- rule-knowledge
- positioning
- communication
- procedures
- complete a Canadian Hockey National Referee Exam
- and many other important skills of a hockey official
To become a new official in the North Zone, you must:
- Be of the age 13 by Jan. 1, 2012
- Attend a clinic
- Pass the Canadian Hockey National Referee Exam

One-Day Clinic
- Must have registered as an official the previous year
- Must be registering as a level 2 official or higher for the current hockey season
Two-Day Clinic
- All first time officials. Age and hockey experience are not a factor.
- All experienced officials that did not register the previous year
- All level one officials
